I shared the “academic-speak” title of the book with the Seattle Rotary Club to widespread chuckles:

“The Paradigm of Narrative as it Relates to Social Trust and the Conveyance of Knowledge in Networked Systems and Society.”



Renewing Storytelling through a New Value Proposition

A decade ago, the book Bowling Alone observed the fragmentation of American community (and democracy).  That we had become more centered on our professional selves and the workplace — and no longer our home, church or neighborhood.  Thanks to the Internet, broadband and various digital tools, social networks have somewhat rekindled the community connection.  But it’s a different type of connection:

- By nature, it’s founded on “weak ties” — transitory connections, leading to heterogeneous communities with potentially strong bridging capital, but weak bonding capital.  These communities form quickly in response to a particular event (sometimes becoming an event themselves) and may provide great impact because of the power to bridge disparate social groups.  What’s happening in Iran — and outside of Iran during last summer’s protests — may be a good example of this.

- However, these communities are also vulnerable.  They need its members to retain an ongoing level of faith and contribution.  Also, the technology that sustains them can be shut down (Iran).

So, let’s look at this as a new kind of storytelling.  One that recreates the value proposition of communication — a relationship between the storyteller and a community of participants (cemented by an emotional bond, that inspires the community to engage in a transaction).

How very analog of me.  After I quit my job in network TV news, I used digital technology and social media to produce a documentary film five years ago, a sequel in 2008 — and leveraged that experience to head up a graduate program in digital media our of Seattle.  Now I’m going to write a book.  About storytelling.   You may remember, “Once upon a time…”

This isn’t about bedtime stories (although we can draw a couple of lessons from them).   It’s about how to apply the fundamentals of storytelling to a vastly changed media ecosystem.  And why that can convince people to pay attention to us.  (It also requires us to pay attention to them by the way.)

Here’s the model I’m trying to develop.  By its very nature, I need to connect with you to make it work.  Yes, I’m yet another voice in the digital wilderness.
